What a Suspension Costs Depends on Your Street

Relocating an office can be a complex process. Here are some common pain points businesses in Edinburgh face:

Four Things That Decide How the Day Goes

Where Edinburgh Office Moves Are Won or Lost

We offer a comprehensive approach to office removals in Edinburgh, ensuring a smooth and sustainable transition:

A written inventory

Everything moving, listed and agreed before any figure is quoted. The quotation is built on that document.

The parking position, settled early

Dispensation or suspension, notice period and cost identified at the survey rather than the week of the move.

A window that suits trading

Evenings and weekends available and priced in from the start, not added afterwards.

Clear on what is extra

Packing, materials, dismantling and storage all priced at the survey, so nothing lands on the invoice unannounced.

Office Removals in Edinburgh Without Losing a Day of Trading

Thirty minutes. Beyond that you need a parking dispensation from the City of Edinburgh Council, which carries a sixteen pound administration charge per vehicle and per location and needs at least twenty four hours notice. No office move fits inside thirty minutes, so this is settled at the survey rather than on the day.

It depends entirely on your street. Edinburgh charges suspensions at the public parking rate for that area, and states plainly that there is no lower charge for permit bays or for essential works. A city centre address costs meaningfully more than a peripheral one, which is why the figure comes after a survey rather than before it.

Three days for resident permit parking spaces and two days for public parking bays, with weekends excluded from the count in both cases. Payment must also clear before the request is processed. In practice that makes a Friday decision for a Monday move impossible, which is the single most common reason an Edinburgh move starts badly.

Any vehicle issued with a penalty charge notice in Edinburgh can be removed to the council car pound. The pound operates from eight in the morning until half past six, Monday to Saturday only, so a vehicle lifted outside those hours stays where it is until the pound reopens. Arranging lawful parking sits with the customer under our terms, which is exactly why we settle it at the survey.

Yes, and for most Edinburgh offices it is the sensible choice. Note that the council suspensions team works Monday to Friday, eight until three, so the paperwork for a weekend move has to be complete by Friday afternoon. Weekend and out of hours working carries its own rates, which are quoted at the survey rather than added later.

From a written inventory agreed at the survey, covering what is moving and the access at both ends. The quotation is built against that document, and if what we collect matches it the figure stands. If the inventory has grown or the access differs from what was described, we re-quote before starting rather than invoicing a surprise afterwards.

Dismantling and reassembling furniture, and disconnecting or reconnecting anything plumbed, gassed or wired in, including computers, servers and phone systems. Packing, materials, specialist handling and storage are available and priced separately. Anything added on the day rather than at the survey is charged at a short notice rate.

They change the crew size rather than the price of the furniture. Stone stair cores, tight turns at half landings and doorways that predate standard sizes all cost time, and time is what a move is priced on. We measure the stair and the turn at the survey rather than assuming from a floor plan.

Fuel, gas canisters, solvents, paints and aerosols are excluded. Cash, deeds, certificates and anything irreplaceable travel better with you. Furniture must be emptied before we arrive, including drawers and cabinets, and packed boxes should not exceed twenty kilos with anything over fifteen clearly marked.

Protection Cover applies at the level agreed beforehand. Our terms are explicit that this is a contractual allocation of responsibility rather than insurance, and that it is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Extended Liability Cover can be purchased for an additional fee, and it is worth settling while the surveyor is with you.

Tell us as early as possible. Beyond ten working days there is no cancellation charge, though any deposit paid secures the date, vehicles and crew and is not returned. Closer in a published scale applies: up to thirty per cent from five to ten working days, up to sixty at two to four days, up to seventy five within forty eight hours and the full amount on the day.

Edinburgh across EH1 to EH17, plus Leith, Gorgie, Sighthill and the western business parks, and out to Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Livingston, Linlithgow, Queensferry and into Fife. Relocations south towards Newcastle and beyond are quoted against the same written inventory.

Six Things That Derail an Edinburgh Office Move

The first three are specific to Edinburgh, and every one of the six is settled before the date rather than on it.

What the Council Needs, and When

Edinburgh separates the two things people tend to confuse. A dispensation lets you load on a yellow line for longer than half an hour. A suspension takes a bay out of use entirely. They cost differently and they need different notice.
What you needNotice requiredWhat it costs
Loading on a single yellow, under 30 minutesNoneNothing
Dispensation, loading over 30 minutesAt least 24 hours£16 admin charge per vehicle, per location
Suspension of a public parking bay2 days, weekends excludedThe public parking rate for that street
Suspension of a resident permit bay3 days, weekends excludedNo discount for permit bays
Anything at allCouncil team works Mon to Fri, 8am to 3pmPayment must clear before processing

The row that catches most businesses is the last one. The council suspensions team is available Monday to Friday between eight and three, and payment has to clear before an application is processed. Neither of those bends for a completion date, so the sequence has to start earlier than feels necessary.

These figures come from the council and change periodically, so treat them as a planning guide rather than a quotation. What does not change is the shape: decide the date, then work backwards through notice periods that exclude weekends.

Where the cost actually sits

On most Edinburgh office moves the council charges are the smaller number. The larger one is the working time you lose, and that is driven by three things a surveyor can measure: how much is going, how far it has to be carried from the vehicle to the door, and how many floors sit between the two. A tenement stair with a half landing turn costs more crew hours than an extra ten desks does.

This is why the survey is not a sales visit. It produces the inventory the quotation attaches to, and it settles the questions that otherwise get answered expensively on the morning: which vehicle fits the street, how many crew the stair needs, whether the lift can be booked, and what the parking position actually is.

Getting the date right

Lease dates cluster at month end and quarter day, and so does everyone else’s move. If your date has any flexibility at all, a mid month weekday is easier to resource and easier to park. Where it has none, the answer is to start earlier rather than to hope, because none of the council notice periods flex for a completion that slipped.

Five Questions Worth Asking Any Edinburgh Office Mover

Quotations are hard to compare because they rarely describe the same job. These five make two of them comparable in about five minutes.

1. What is this price built on?

A figure produced without a survey is an estimate wearing a quotation’s clothes. Ask what inventory it is based on, and what happens if the volume on the day differs from it. A written list is the only thing that makes a price mean anything.

2. Does our address need a dispensation or a suspension?

They are different applications with different costs and different notice periods. A firm that cannot tell you which one your street needs has not looked at your street.

3. What is excluded?

Packing, materials, dismantling and reassembly, storage and out of hours rates are commonly charged separately. That is normal and fine, provided you hear about it before rather than after. Ask for it in writing.

4. What cover applies, and what does it actually pay?

Ask for the figure per item, the overall ceiling, and whether it is insurance or a contractual arrangement between you and the firm. Those are not the same thing and the difference matters if something is broken.

5. What happens if the date slips?

Commercial dates move constantly. Ask what a change costs at four weeks, two weeks and two days, and whether any deposit is returnable. A firm with a published answer has thought about it; one that improvises will improvise the invoice too.

See What Your Edinburgh Office Move Costs

Both addresses and a rough idea of what is moving. That is enough to begin.

A survey follows, then an itemised quotation built against an agreed inventory. You will also get a straight answer on whether your address needs a dispensation or a suspension, what it costs on your street, and how much notice the council needs. Beyond ten working days there is no cancellation charge from us.
