A W1 Permit Is No Use in W2

Wigan operates three controlled parking zones, with two more in Leigh, and the council is explicit that a permit issued for one zone cannot be used to park in another. A W1 permit does not work in W2, even a few streets away.

That catches businesses out in a way it rarely catches residents, because a business relocating within the borough is exactly the situation where you would assume an existing permit carries over. It does not. If your new premises sit in a different zone, the permits start again from scratch.

The useful half of the same rule is that Wigan lets business premises apply at all. The council states that all owners and occupiers within a controlled zone, residential and business alike, may apply for permits. Plenty of authorities restrict this to residents. Applications can be made up to a month ahead, and the council asks you to allow five working days for processing.

One more thing worth building the plan around. Council-owned town centre car parks in both Wigan and Leigh are free at weekends. For a business that can move on a Saturday, that removes a cost and a constraint at the same time. Note the Grand Arcade is not council owned, so it does not apply there.

Six Things Worth Sorting Before a Wigan Move

Six recurring failures account for most of the money wasted on a move. Each one is preventable.
What usually goes wrongWhat we do insteadWhat that means for you
A figure that changes on the dayWritten at survey with the price attachedWhat was agreed is what is invoiced
A date that keeps movingNo charge beyond ten working daysBook now, adjust as needed
Assuming the permit transfersBoth controlled zones checked before applyingNo wasted application in the wrong zone
Paying weekday rates unnecessarilyWeekend car park position checkedA cheaper move for the same work
Cover limits noticed after damageSet out during the surveyChoices made in advance
A day of trading goneOut of hours slots agreed at the outsetOpen as normal the next morning

No Cancellation Charge Beyond Ten Working Days

Cancel with more than ten working days to run and no cancellation charge applies.

Within that window: up to thirty per cent from five to ten working days, up to sixty at two to four, up to seventy five inside forty eight hours, and everything on the day.

Wigan permits do not travel between zones and applications want a month’s run-up, so establishing the position early is worth real money. no cancellation charge removes any reason to delay.

One thing to be clear about: where a deposit has been paid it secures the date, the vehicle and the crew, and it is not returned if you cancel. The scale above relates to cancellation charges rather than to the deposit.

Which Wigan and Leigh Areas the Crews Cover

WN1 to WN7 as standard, from both town centres out to Standish, Orrell, Hindley and Ashton-in-Makerfield. The third column is what changes the plan between two otherwise similar premises.

What Shapes a Wigan Quote

A job sheet gets written during the survey and the price is attached to it. Provided the load matches the sheet, the number you were given is the number you pay.

Wigan has three controlled parking zones and Leigh has two, and a permit for one cannot be used in another. A business moving from one zone to another starts the permit process again. We check which zone both addresses fall in at survey, because it changes what staff can do from the first Monday onwards.

Wigan allows all owners and occupiers within a controlled zone to apply, business as well as residential, which is more generous than many authorities. Applications can be submitted up to a month in advance and the council asks for five working days to process. That is a comfortable lead time if it is started at survey rather than the week of the move.

Council-owned town centre car parks in Wigan and Leigh are free at weekends. For a business that can move on a Saturday, that removes both a cost and the weekday kerbside pressure in one decision. The Grand Arcade is privately owned so it sits outside that, and most machines are now card or phone only, with cash accepted at Water Street, Mona Street and Spinning Gate.

Keeping the Doors Open

The expensive part of an office move is the hours you are not trading, not the vehicle. The window is agreed before the price and the schedule built backwards from it.

Wigan gives you a reason to consider a Saturday that most towns do not, since council-owned town centre car parks in Wigan and Leigh are free at weekends. For a business with a shopfront that usually means opening as normal on Monday, and it takes the weekday kerbside pressure out at the same time.

What to sort before the date

A floor plan of the new premises with desks numbered, a named decision-maker on site, and confirmation of who is handling IT. Our crews are not qualified to disconnect or reconnect computers, servers or phone systems, so book your own provider around the move. Taking furniture apart and rebuilding it is only included where agreed in writing beforehand.

And the permits

If the new address sits in a different controlled zone from the old one, the permits do not transfer and the process starts again. Applications can go in a month ahead and the council asks for five working days, so this is comfortably solved if it is raised at survey rather than in the final week.

Only if the new address is in the same controlled parking zone. Wigan has three zones and Leigh has two, and the council states that a permit for one zone cannot be used to park in another. A business relocating within the borough frequently ends up in a different zone, so permits start again. We confirm both zones at survey.

Yes. Wigan allows all owners and occupiers of premises within a controlled parking zone to apply, business as well as residential, which is more generous than many councils. Apply up to a month in advance and allow five working days for processing.

In Wigan, yes, and not only because it is quieter. Council-owned town centre car parks in both Wigan and Leigh are free at weekends, so a Saturday move removes a cost as well as the weekday kerbside pressure. The Grand Arcade is not council owned, so that does not extend to it.

It attracts a penalty charge. Wigan requires the permit to be displayed inside the vehicle so that every detail can be read by a Civil Enforcement Officer. It is a small thing that undoes an otherwise well-planned move, so we check it before the crew starts.

Everything off the desks is crated and labelled by destination. If furniture needs breaking down and rebuilding, that gets agreed and priced beforehand. Computers, servers and phone systems are disconnected and reconnected by your provider rather than by us.
