The week before you move is where most moving stress actually lives. You’ve booked the van, packed a few boxes, told yourself you’re “basically ready” – and then Wednesday hits and you realise you haven’t defrosted the freezer, redirected your post, or worked out where the kettle is going to live on moving day.
This is the day-by-day moving checklist that fixes that. If you’ve already worked through our complete 8-week planning checklist, think of this as the zoom-in: the final seven days, broken down task by task, so nothing gets missed in the last-minute scramble.
We’ve built this around what actually goes wrong in the final week of a move – not generic advice, but the specific things (meter readings, confirmation calls, that one box you can’t find at 11pm) that trip people up. Follow it day by day and moving day itself becomes almost boring. Which, when you’re moving house, is exactly what you want.

7 Days Before: Confirm and Finalize
This is the single most important day of your moving countdown checklist, and it’s the one people skip.
Call your removal company and confirm everything in writing, not just the date:
Arrival time (and whether that’s a fixed slot or a window)
Access details – parking restrictions, permit requirements, narrow lanes, lift availability in flats
Final headcount of rooms, large items, and any awkward pieces (piano, wardrobe, garden furniture)
Payment method and what’s due on the day
If you booked your movers weeks ago, this is a quick confirmation call. If you haven’t locked in a removals company yet, seven days out is genuinely the last comfortable window to do it – after this, you’re relying on last-minute availability, which usually means paying more for less certainty.
This is exactly why we push clients to confirm early rather than the night before. At EcoGreen Movers, every one of our 400+ completed moves starts with a confirmed slot, a named crew, and full insurance cover – so there’s no scrambling on day one of your final week wondering if the van is actually turning up. If you’re still weighing up options, our guide on how to choose a removals company that actually cares covers the questions worth asking before you sign anything.
Other jobs for today:
Confirm your completion date (if buying/selling) or tenancy handover time (if renting)
Book time off work for moving day and the day after
Order any last packing materials – boxes, tape, bubble wrap
Check parking suspensions or permits needed outside both properties
If you’re not fully booked yet, get a quote from EcoGreen Movers today – locking this in first thing means every other task this week has a fixed anchor point.
6 Days Before: Start the Final Pack
Six days out is when packing needs to shift from “occasional box” to “proper system.”
Pack room by room, starting with the least-used spaces:
Spare room, loft, garage, and storage cupboards first
Seasonal items (Christmas decorations, winter coats if it’s summer, garden tools)
Books, DVDs, and anything on display shelves
Framed pictures and mirrors, wrapped flat with cardboard corners
Label every box on two sides with the room it’s going to and a one-line contents summary. “Kitchen – mugs and tea towels” saves you twenty minutes of guessing on move-in day.
If you’re still holding onto things you know you won’t take, now’s the time to deal with them, not moving morning. Our guide on decluttering before a move has a quick sell/donate/bin framework – even a couple of hours sorting a garage or wardrobe today can mean two or three fewer boxes on the van.
A quick note on materials: cardboard boxes and bubble wrap add up fast, and a lot of it ends up in landfill within a week of the move. EcoGreen Movers packs with reusable crates and recycled materials as standard – it’s part of why we’ve been able to plant over 100 trees through our move-offset scheme, and it means you’re not left with a garage full of flattened boxes afterwards.
5 Days Before: Utilities and Admin
This is the admin-heavy day, and it’s the one that causes the most “oh no” moments weeks after moving if skipped.
Redirect your mail. Set up a Royal Mail redirection at least five working days before your move date – apply any later and it won’t be active in time. It covers 3, 6, or 12 months, and Royal Mail recommends 12 months to limit the risk of your old address ending up with sensitive post after you’ve left.
Update your address with the essentials:
DVLA – driving licence and V5C log book
HMRC via your Personal Tax Account (covers Income Tax, Child Benefit, tax credits in one update)
Your bank, employer, GP, and dentist
Your new and old local councils, for council tax
Sort your utilities. Per Citizens Advice, you generally don’t “transfer” gas and electricity between addresses – you close the account at the old property and open a new one at the new address, using meter readings taken on the day you leave and the day you arrive. Give your current supplier at least 48 hours’ notice of your move-out date, and contact the new address’s supplier within 14 days of moving in.
Broadband is its own headache – most contracts need 14-30 days’ notice to avoid a gap in service, so if you haven’t called your provider yet, do it today.
4 Days Before: Deep Clean as You Go
Cleaning an entire house the day before you leave is miserable and rushed. Spreading it across today and tomorrow isn’t.
Clean rooms as they empty, in this order:
Rooms already fully packed (skirting boards, inside cupboards, behind doors)
Bathrooms and kitchen surfaces you’re no longer using daily
Windows and window sills
Carpets – book a cleaner now if you’re renting and need it for your deposit return
If you’re leaving a rented flat, this is also the point to line up your cleaning against your check-out inventory. Our leaseholder and renter’s moving-out checklist covers what most agents actually check.
Two things to line up today, not later:
Confirm cleaning access for your new home before your furniture arrives, if you’re doing a pre-move clean there
Text your removal crew’s contact to reconfirm the arrival window and access notes from day 7
Doing this in the middle of the week, rather than as one big push, is one of the quietest ways to keep the final 48 hours calm.

3 Days Before: Defrost and Empty
The freezer is the task everyone forgets, and it’s the one that causes a genuine mess if you leave it too late.
Defrost your freezer today – not tomorrow, not the night before. It needs a good 24-48 hours to fully defrost and dry out, and a wet freezer on the back of a van is a bad start to any move.
Eat down your freezer stock over the final week so there’s less to defrost or waste
Empty the fridge of anything that won’t survive the journey
Unplug both appliances and leave doors open to air out
Have towels and a bowl ready to catch the melt
Also today:
Empty and defrost any chest freezers in the garage or garden
Use up cleaning products, toiletries, and food you don’t want to move (liquids and half-used bottles are notoriously bad in transit)
Return library books, borrowed items, and anything on loan
If you’re moving out of London, Manchester, Edinburgh or another city with tight parking and access restrictions, this is also a good moment to double-check your removal company knows the exact street layout. Crews covering routes like house removals in Manchester or removals in Edinburgh will usually ask about this upfront, but it’s worth confirming again with three days to go.
2 Days Before: Pack the Essentials Box
Everything you’ll need in the first 24 hours at the new place goes in one clearly marked box – packed last, unpacked first.
What should go in your moving day essentials box:
Phone chargers and a spare charging cable
Toiletries, toothbrushes, and a change of clothes for everyone
Medication and any prescriptions you need daily
Kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, and milk (or a small cooler bag)
Toilet roll, hand soap, and a couple of towels
Bin bags, kitchen roll, and basic cleaning spray
Snacks and bottled water for the day itself
Important documents – passports, tenancy agreement or completion paperwork, moving company confirmation
A basic toolkit – screwdriver, tape, scissors
Pet food and bowls, if you have animals travelling with you
Keep this box (or two, if you’ve got kids) in the car with you rather than on the van. It’s the difference between a calm first evening and rummaging through fifteen unlabelled boxes at 9pm looking for a phone charger.
Also today:
Finish packing everything except tonight’s and tomorrow’s essentials
Charge power banks and any battery packs
Confirm parking or loading bay access at the new property one final time
1 Day Before: Final Checks
The day before moving day is about closing loops, not starting new tasks.
Take final meter readings at your current home – photograph them as proof for your final utility bills
Do a full walkthrough of every room, cupboard, loft space, and shed to catch anything left behind
Charge every phone and device fully overnight – you’ll be using yours constantly on the day
Set aside cash for the removal crew if you want to tip – £10-£20 per person is typical for a half-day move, more for a full day or a tricky job (stairs, long carry distances, awkward parking)
Pack your overnight bag separately from the essentials box if you’re staying somewhere other than the new house tonight
Reconfirm the crew’s arrival time one last time by text or call
If anything with the property still isn’t sorted – keys not yet released, completion delayed, tenancy overlap unclear – flag it with your removal company today, not at 7am tomorrow. A good team can usually flex by a few hours; what they can’t do is materialise extra time if you only tell them on the morning.

Moving Day: What to Have Ready by 8am
By the time the van arrives, you shouldn’t be packing – you should be waiting.
Have ready before the crew arrives:
Essentials box and overnight bag in the car, not on the van
All boxes sealed, labelled, and grouped by room near the door
Beds stripped and disassembled if agreed with your removal team
Meter readings written down or photographed
Keys for both properties, plus spares for the new owners/landlord if needed
Cash for tips, in an easy-to-reach pocket, not a packed wallet at the bottom of a box
Parking cleared outside for the van, and neighbours given a heads-up if access is tight
Phone fully charged, with your removal company’s contact number saved
Walk the house one more time once everything’s loaded – check every room, both bathrooms, and outdoor storage before you lock up and hand over keys.
This is the moment all the previous six days of prep pay off. A crew that’s confirmed, insured, and briefed on access issues moves faster and more carefully than one working things out on the spot. That’s the whole point of doing the countdown properly – by moving day, there’s nothing left to figure out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack last when moving?
Your essentials box, phone chargers, toiletries, medication, a kettle and mugs, and any important documents. Pack these on the morning of the move or the night before, and keep them separate from the van – ideally in the car with you.
What should be in my essentials box for moving day?
Chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, medication, tea/coffee-making basics, toilet roll, bin bags, snacks, water, important documents, and a small toolkit. Think “what do I need in the next 24 hours if every other box stays sealed.”
How do I confirm my removal company before moving day?
Call or email them around 7 days before the move to confirm the arrival time, access details (parking, lifts, permits), and payment method – then send a final reconfirmation text the day before. Get everything in writing, including any access notes about your specific street or building.
What if I’m not ready a week before my move?
Don’t panic – prioritise ruthlessly. Confirm your removal company and utilities first, since those have fixed deadlines. Then focus packing on non-essential rooms, and accept that some last-minute boxing on moving morning is normal. A reliable, experienced crew can absorb some last-minute chaos far better than an inexperienced one, which is another good reason not to leave the booking itself until the last minute.
The Week Before, Made Simple
The final week of a move isn’t about doing more – it’s about doing the right things in the right order, so nothing collides on the day itself.
Confirm your removal company early. Redirect your mail on time. Defrost the freezer before it becomes a puddle. Pack the essentials box last. Do those in sequence, and moving day genuinely does become the calmest day of the week, not the worst one.
